Annotated editions and companion books can comply with later, I said, but let readers first uncover this essay in English the way in which French readers discover it in French – and people around the world in their own un-annotated editions. Are there girls, really? It requires two healthy individuals who’re safe in themselves. I do remember meeting Nancy Bauer (who, by the best way, falsely presents me as the translators’ scholar, which I never was) at a Beauvoir conference in Paris two years ago. Nancy Bauer was furious. 1921 and extended to incorporate 20,000 phrases within the 1931 version. I answered that, first, this e book was not published in France by a college press but by a trade writer and, second, that it was preferable that the first version of the brand new translation be similar to the one Beauvoir initially published and which was nonetheless efficiently promoting 60 years later. Second, that this new edition ought to be fully annotated (which might have transformed this 800-web page guide into a 1000-page one) beneath the supervision of an editorial committee impartial of Knopf and Cape. As a result of the debate in your pages I ordered the new English model, which did shock me a bit. This was unimaginable, since Cape and Knopf had no reason to abandon their exclusive rights to the book’s English publication. Another philosopher and i had an extended conversation at the Paris symposium with Anne-Solange Noble, the overseas rights director at Gallimard, who found the translators – her ESL teachers – and acquired an editor at Jonathan Cape/Knopf to take on the project. TERFs wouldn’t need to live within the form of society most likely to emerge from the philosophy that sex should decide rights and alternatives. Is that what we want it to be? And Harry would not want to kill Draco anymore if he had one? Most assuredly the theory of the eternal feminine nonetheless has its adherents who will whisper in your ear: ‘Even in Russia ladies nonetheless are women’; and other erudite persons – sometimes the very same – say with a sigh: ‘Woman is shedding her way, lady is misplaced.’ One wonders if girls still exist, if they are going to always exist, whether or not or not it is desirable that they need to, what place they occupy in this world, what their place must be.
